Site Name Tips
This is my mini-blog about site names, its importance, tips on how to pick them, and a small lsit for inspiration and/or for your to pick.
A site name is the most important thing when opening a site...so many people look over this detail! Your name not only has to be somewhat catchy and interesting, but personally, it should have a deeper meaning. That way you can stick to it for a long time and make it your own unique brand.
Here are some tips to help you pick a name:
-First, do not rush yourself...picking a cool name takes time. Think of it like an essay, a song, a painting. The artist spends some time drafting and sketching, making sure it comes out exactly like he/she wants.
-Now look around you. When your driving somewhere boring, look into the signs, observe details and start describing them..like a building: "skycraper, tall, shiny" somewhere in there a cool noun or adjective will pop up.Think of your favorite place (beach,mountains, your room) and describe it; name things from it... write down or make a list of options you like
-Nothing really yet? Open up your itunes, and listen to your favorite bands...got a favorite song?Album? Mix up song names or pick a word that stands out in the title. Got a favorite lyric? Quote? Pick a word or small phrase that stands out.
- What NOT to do: name your site after any tropical fruit, or with any of these words: love, shimmer, pop, show, style, fashion, pink, etc, or anything extremely girly. There's about 458975027032759 sites with names like that, and you don't want to be number 458975027032760 :)
-Also, extremely long names are not usually a good idea. Even with an acronym, people will always ask you what it means. It's also hard to remember.
-Bottom line is to pick something that you and your users will remember and find appealing. Think of it as a clothing line's name.
